Customer Request
The customer requested the development of a system to track the number of reusable containers in stock, monitor reusable containers shipped to customers, and record their return, with the containers categorized by type.
Solution Description
In an effort to streamline the tracking of returnable packaging in the warehouse and improve the monitoring of its movement, we have implemented a solution that uses RFID technology. This solution includes several key components that work together to ensure accurate and efficient tracking of returnable packaging.
Every returnable container in the warehouse has been tagged with RFID tags. These tags are unique and allow for the unambiguous identification of each container. The RFID tags are assigned to specific containers using an app on a handheld device equipped with an RFID reader. In this way, we ensure that every returnable container is properly recorded and ready for further tracking.
An RFID gate equipped with RFID antennas and readers has been installed at the entrance to the facility. This gate is used to automatically identify returnable containers as they pass through. Returnable containers marked with RFID tags are then loaded onto a truck, which leaves the facility through this RFID gate.
The RFID hardware at the gate is directly connected to our software system, which records every truck’s trip back and forth. Based on the data collected, we are able to accurately determine the truck’s direction of travel. This means we can identify whether these returnable containers were shipped to a customer or returned by a customer.
Intranet Application
A user interface in the form of a website was designed and developed for this system. This interface allows users to view all operations involving the movement of returnable containers in and out of the facility. For each movement, the exact type of returnable container, as well as the time and date of the movement, is recorded. This data is then stored in a database, allowing for later analysis.
The web interface itself allows users to view all data in clear charts, which makes it easier to visualize and understand the movement of returnable containers. In addition, this data can be exported to formats such as Excel, allowing for further processing and sharing with other systems or stakeholders.
Benefits of the Solution for the Customer
Thanks to this solution, the customer gained a complete overview of the number of reusable containers and their location as they move between the customer and its clients. Data accuracy has improved, and the process of tracking and recording this data has been significantly simplified; it now runs fully automatically without the need for manual intervention by operators.
In this case, we were able to capitalize on the greatest advantages of RFID technology, such as contactless and multiple scanning of identification elements, even at greater distances.
